Flourish Bakery Kicks Off “Raise The Dough” Campaign to Expand Program, Move Into Permanent Location
Flourish Bakery, the social enterprise of Unshackled, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is kicking off their Raise The Dough fundraising campaign with a press event hosted by the board on June 29th, 2018 at 4:00 PM. The event will be held at the Salt Lake Community College South City Campus. An event schedule and site map are included below.
Since January of 2018, Flourish Bakery’s pilot program has been teaching the art and skills of professional baking as part of a paid internship for individuals in recovery from addiction who are post-incarceration. Raise The Dough campaign proceeds will be used to purchase equipment, expand the program, and renovate and move into Flourish’s permanent home in South Salt Lake City. Flourish’s Executive Director, Aimee Altizer, explains that “baking is a metaphor for life transformation. Ingredients come together in a favorable environment and are transformed into something nourishing and beautiful.” Since starting the pilot program, Flourish has more applications than it has positions. “It’s clear there is a need for these kinds of skilled employment and training opportunities,” Altizer says. “The industry is also in need of trained culinary staff. Raise The Dough is a campaign to meet that need--both for individuals in our program and for the community at large.”
Ed Turner, Chair of the Unshackled Board of Directors, said that “Flourish is a community program and Raise The Dough is a community effort.” He explains that “many Utah families are affected by the cycle of addiction. We believe we can and must do better to create hope and opportunity for these families.” The Unshackled board is hosting the kickoff to introduce the Flourish program to the public and celebrate the contributions pledged to the campaign from area businesses and organizations.
Members of the press will have an opportunity to see the Flourish Bakery pilot program space, take photographs and/or film, and meet the program participants and staff at 4:00 PM. Starting at 4:45, the event, emceed by KRCL Director of Community Engagement Billy Palmer, will feature brief remarks from Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, SLCC Provost for Academic Affairs Dr. Clifton Sanders, Unshackled Executive Director Aimee Altizer, and other community leaders. The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi from the Episcopal Diocese of Utah will present Flourish Bakery with a $100,000 grant, kicking off Raise The Dough with a check presentation at 5:15. KRCL, the campaign media sponsor, will then broadcast live music and the program Radioactive from the event from 6:00-7:00 PM. Flourish representatives will be featured on-air with Radioactive hosts Lara Jones and Punk Rock Farmer Al Grossi. Unshackled board members, as well as the Flourish staff and interns, will be available throughout the event to answer questions and talk with guests. Catering will be provided by the Flourish bakers.
The Raise The Dough kickoff will be held in Multipurpose Room 1-032 and the attached courtyard at Salt Lake Community College, South City Campus, 1575 S. State Street. We have arranged for free parking in any of the campus lots to the East of the building (location 4 on the map below). No payment or permit is required to park at this event. Guests may enter through the SE gate to the courtyard (marked 5 on the map below).
